Mathematical quiz?

Three friends check into a motel for the night and the clerk tells them the bill is $30, payable in advance. So, they each pay the clerk $10 and go to their room. A few minutes later, the clerk realizes he has made an error and overcharged the trio by $5. He asks the bellhop to return $5 to the 3 friends who had just checked in. The bellhop sees this as an opportunity to make $2 as he reasons that the three friends would have a tough time dividing $5 evenly among them; so he decides to tell them that the clerk made a mistake of only $3, giving a dollar back to each of the friends. He pockets the leftover $2 and goes home for the day! Now, each of the three friends gets a dollar back, thus they are each out of pocket $9 for the room which is a total of $27 for the night. We know the bellhop pocketed $2 and adding that to the $27, you get $29, not $30 which was originally spent. Where did the other dollar go?

Mathematical quiz?

The 3 men give $30 in total for the room.

So far, the $30 are all with the manager.

The manager then gives $5 to the bellhop.

So far, the manager has $25 and the bellhop has $5.

The bellhop gives $1 to each man.

At this point, each man has $1, the bellhop has $2, and the manager has $25, accounting for all $30.

So the men paid $27 in total. $2 went to the bell hop, and $25 went to the manager. There is no missing dollar.

The reason there appears to be a missing dollar in the question is because the question tells you to add the bellhop's money to the $27, rather than subtract it. The reason you are supposed to subtract it is that the $2 came out of the $27 paid, not in addition to it.

Mathematical quiz?

This is why sometimes i dont like maths!!

Mathematical quiz?

I have no idea

Mathematical quiz?

They gave $30 and got $1 back.

Thus they gave $27.

The clerk got $25 and the bellhop $2

25 + 2 = 27

The error in the problem is that it adds money given ($27) to money pocketed($2), which does not mean anything.

It is like saying I bought a steak for $15 in a restaurant, $3 of which go to the waitress, and then add 15 to 3.

Mathematical quiz?

there is no missing $

they paid 30

got back 3

total 27 spent

clerk has 25 + 2 bellhop

total spent 27

Mathematical quiz?

there is a misdirection here...why did you add 27 and 2?

this is not mathematically logical...

nothing has disappeared here...you have just followed the erroneous instructions of the storyteller...there is 25 dollars

in the till, 2 dollars in the bellhop's pocket and 3 dollars in the

friends' pockets(1 dollar each)...add these(25+3+2=30) and the moneyis accounted for. In this classic(I 1st heard this over 40years ago.) The clerk has lost 2 dollars to the bellhop; therefore you should subtract from 27(not add to 27) toget 25 dollars, the amount received by the clerk. In short,

the bellhop has stolen 2 dollars from the clerk who should have gotten 27 instead of 25.

Mathematical quiz?

this is very long and confusing and im already lost at the beginning, if you made it shorter, i'll probably figure it out.
